EDITORS' NOTE.

The Editorial Committee of Contemporary Southeast Asia (CSEA) and colleagues at the ISEAS--Yusof Ishak Institute were shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Professor Aileen Baviera on 21 March 2020 in Manila from complications caused by the coronavirus. In a career spanning more than four decades, Professor Baviera established herself as the Philippines' leading scholar on China and one of the world's foremost authorities on the South China Sea dispute. In addition to being a Professor at the University of the Philippines, she was also Dean of the University's Asia Center from 2003 to 2009, President of the Asia Pacific Pathways to Progress Foundation and Editor-in-chief of Asian Politics and Policy. She had been a valuable member of CSEA's International Advisory Committee since 2016. A regular presenter at conferences on Southeast Asia-China relations, Professor Baviera was always a voice of reason and moderation, and her insights were keenly sought by scholars, students...
